There are ten broad factors that affect a woman’s ability to be self-sufficient (commonly defined as 250% of the Federal Poverty Level or about $40,000 a year for a family of three.)
Although we realize these areas are connected and interdependent. we focus our efforts on four areas.

While many single mothers work, a majority of them make a wage that is insufficient to meet their family’s basic needs.
According to the Jobs and Gender Outlook report released by The Women’s Fund in 2014 (and prepared by the UC Economics Center): In 2020, 4 out of every 7 women in Greater Cincinnati are predicted to work in occupations with a median wage that is inadequate to support a woman with one child without public assistance.
Additionally, five of the six occupation groups that currently are the most female-dominated have the 2012 median annual wages of $40,000 or less, which is insufficient to provide the basics for a woman who is the single parent of two children.
Cincinnati ranks 2nd in the nation in childhood poverty. Two out of every three kids in poverty in Greater Cincinnati live in a single female-headed household. We believe one of the best strategies to address children’s poverty is to make sure moms can attain living wage jobs and overcome common barriers like childcare.
Our Strategies to Improve Women’s Self-Sufficiency in Cincinnati
- Promote use of gender lens in all community research to better identify the barriers and educate decision makers with disaggregated data
- Build a common agenda and shared goals with key stakeholders
- Engage business community to address gender equity through voluntary, employer-led initiatives that also improve business results
- Champion relevant policy advocacy
- Incubate projects that improve women’s economic self-sufficiency
