The seeds of Iva Brown and Bertha Lacey Jones’ friendship were planted in 1960. Jones was a young newlywed, new to Cincinnati; Brown a college student at the University of Cincinnati. They met through the Sigma Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority.
“In any city you can find sisters who will welcome you with open arms,” Brown said.
AKA is not a typical sorority, Brown explained. For one, the commitment doesn’t end with college graduation. After commencement, “sorors” or “sisters” of the sorority increase their community service.
