Dorothy - We hardly knew you

People on her street remembered Dorothy G. Klasen as a kind and generous neighbor who mowed her own lawn and raked her own leaves until she was no longer able. Her kindness was returned by other neighbors who helped her stay in her own home until just a few weeks before she died.

Dorothy KlausenDorothy G. Klasen was one of those welcome surprises that come to GCF every few years. She was an IRS agent who had inherited money from various family members and invested wisely. When she passed away, Dorothy left a bequest of almost $3.3 million to The Greater Cincinnati Foundation. She also left substantial amounts to Hospice of Cincinnati, CET, The Salvation Army and Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

People on her street remembered Dorothy as a kind and generous neighbor who mowed her own lawn and raked her own leaves until she was no longer able. Her kindness was returned by other neighbors who helped her stay in her own home until just a few weeks before she died.

Robert C. Porter Ill, was Dorothy's attorney for many years and executor of her estate. "I really don't know where she heard about GCF originally, but it was always in her will," he said. Dorothy's bequest established two funds, one to memorialize an uncle, Ray D. Brooks and the other in memory of herself and her parents, John A. and Grace A. Klasen. Her bequest was made with "the clear understanding that the income from this fund will be used to improve the quality of life of the people of this community in ways that are best decided by the Governing Board of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation," according to her Last Will & Testament.

Generous and forward-thinking gifts like this make it possible for GCF to make a profound difference in the quality of life in our community by making grants that address the greatest needs and issues in our region now and in the future.

If you've made provisions for a planned gift to GCF, be sure to let us know— we'd like to get to know more about you!
We'll also thank you and recognize your foresight by making you a member of our Foundation Society
