As the federal government shutdown continues beyond October 31, many families in our community are facing deep uncertainty about putting food on the table. Essential nutrition programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) are at risk of funding disruptions that could leave tens of thousands struggling to feed their families.
Here in Greater Cincinnati, more than 160,000 households depend on SNAP benefits. The potential disruption of this program would have immediate, real-life impacts:
- A surge of demand at food banks: Local food banks are already seeing more families turn to them for help, straining supplies and community resources.
- Families under pressure: Many recipients are already managing higher food costs. A pause in benefits could force impossible choices between groceries, rent, childcare, and other essentials.
- Community-wide ripple effects: SNAP dollars not only feed families—they also fuel our local economy, generating about $1.50 in economic activity for every dollar spent.
At Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF), we believe no one in our region should go hungry. This is a moment for us to come together and show the true meaning of community. We appreciate the swift action by Governor DeWine and his administration to provide much-needed relief resources to neighborhood food banks and families in need. GCF is partnering with the United Way of Greater Cincinnati and other foundations to develop a sustainable strategy to tackle food insecurity. In the meantime, we know that many of our neighbors face hunger now and need immediate access to food. If you are able, please consider a financial contribution to the following local organizations providing critical relief:
- Freestore Foodbank
- Be Concerned
- Last Mile Food Rescue
- St. Vincent de Paul (Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky)
- Meals on Wheels Southwest Ohio & Northern Kentucky
- IPM Food Pantry (Clermont County)
- Henry Hosea House (Newport, Kentucky)
- Go Pantry Corporation (Northern Kentucky)
- Other neighborhood food pantries in your community
Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference—and together, we can help our neighbors weather this difficult time with dignity and hope.
