Scripps Howard Foundation announces 10 semi-finalists for family literacy grant
After a competitive application process, the Scripps Howard Foundation has announced the 10 local nonprofits that have been named semi-finalists for a $100,000 grant to support childhood literacy initiatives in impoverished neighborhoods within the tri-state.
The finalists are:
• Campbell County Public Library
• Children, Inc.
• Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
• Cincinnati Union Bethel
• Dohn Community High School
• Learning Through Art
• NEST Community Learning Center
• Notre Dame Educational Center
• Princeton Mobile Book Center
• The Children’s Home of Cincinnati
Earlier this year, the Scripps Howard Foundation, Greater Cincinnati Foundation and WCPO 9 On Your Side invited local nonprofits to apply for a $100,000 family literacy grant.
The three organizations will announce a maximum of five finalists on March 11 and the winner of the $100,000 grant on April 18.
The grant will be awarded to a single nonprofit that brings books and other literacy resources to Tri-state neighborhoods in need – whether through programs that keep kids supplied with books during the summer, supplement literacy outreach throughout the school year or equip toddlers with their first books.
Winners will be announced during the Scripps Howard Awards, the prestigious annual journalism recognition program presented by the Scripps Howard Foundation, at Memorial Hall in Cincinnati on April 18.
Interested local nonprofits submitted their letters of intent Dec. 20 through Jan. 22. Representatives from the Scripps Howard Foundation and Greater Cincinnati Foundation reviewed the submissions and narrowed the field to 10 proposals.
The selected nonprofits have until Feb. 22 to submit a full grant application. The grant application must detail how the proposed program will provide ongoing support, serve families living in poverty and develop deep relationships with parents as a child’s first teacher. Additional consideration will be given to nonprofits that partner with other organizations in the community to provide additional resources to children and their families.
