A Symbol of Friendship

Larry Dollman“Never throw out the beet juice.” This homespun wisdom offered by Lawrence Dollman to his neighbors symbolizes his simple lifestyle and the friendships he forged late in life.

Lawrence “Larry” Dollman of Glendale passed away in April 2005 in the home where he was born. He was 92.

During the last nine years of his life, the Beaugrand family across the street became close to him.

Carolyn Beaugrand, who took Larry to the grocery store once a week, said that he didn’t spend money on himself.

“He wouldn’t throw anything away,” she shared. “He was the original recycle, reuse, renew person.”

“I can’t help but laugh when I think of his favorite vegetable, beets,” Nicole Beaugrand, a Princeton High School senior wrote in an essay. “Once, trying to be helpful, I put some beets in a bowl with red onions the way he liked it. Larry immediately questioned what I did with the beet juice from the can. After telling him I drained it into the sink, he loudly reproached, ‘Never throw out the beet juice!’ Unbeknownst to me at the time, you could use it to tint your eggs a pretty hue, make regular cabbage into its more colorful cousin and last but not least, you could always drink it straight.”

Larry’s frugality allowed him to help others after his death. His $2.9 million bequest to GCF established the Lawrence A. Dollman Fund and will benefit several organizations including Catholic Relief Services and Habitat for Humanity International.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a mechanic. After the service, he assumed ownership of Dollman Heating and Air Conditioning from his father. Larry never married and took care of his elderly father.
