CINCINNATI (September 11, 2014) - The Greater Cincinnati Foundation lost a dear friend on September 10, 2014. William A. Friedlander, chairman emeritus of Bartlett & Company, presided over a period of crucial transition for the Foundation’s operations, both internally and externally.
Bill was a member of GCF’s Governing Board from 1981 to 1990, chairing the board in 1985 and 1986, and served as Volunteer Director from 1990-1994.
During his term as Director, Bill spearheaded a strategic planning process that, among other things, resulted in more strategic grantmaking and the decision to transition from a primarily volunteer staff to a paid professional staff guided by volunteer leadership.
Bill and his wife Sue have been supporters and champions of GCF for many years, receiving the Jacob E. Davis Award together in 2009. They have been supporters of many other organizations here in our region with their leadership and generous philanthropy.

As a nurse, Mary Ann worked 40 hours a week and overtime whenever she could. She always paid her bills on time and helped to take care of her extended family. Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
After months off work for surgeries and treatments, Mary Ann was overwhelmed with overdue bills, a mound of new medical bills and only a meager short-term disability income. She applied to several assistance programs, but was rejected due to her income.
A friend told Mary Ann about the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy (SVDP), where she now gets her medications. Without the Charitable Pharmacy Mary Ann said, “I don’t know what I would do. My bills simply exceeded my pay.”
She was finally approved for Medicaid, but some of the generic medications covered by Medicaid do not react well with the other prescriptions so she came back to SVDP until that can be adjusted. “Hopefully, I won’t need SVDP much longer,” said Mary Ann.
The SVDP Charitable Pharmacy was a Weathering the Economic Storm grantee. When this story was written in 2010, $245,800 has been given in the area of prescription medication assistance.

The Northern Kentucky Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, was delighted to name Joan and Wm. T. (Bill) Robinson III as recipients of the 2018 Devou Cup during the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner on September 20.
The Devou Cup honors the generosity of individuals who make a profound difference in the quality of community life in Northern Kentucky, now and into the future. Named for 19th century philanthropist William Devou, the Cup has been awarded to exemplary philanthropic leaders since 2004.
"Joan and Bill Robinson created a charitable legacy in our region that endures and inspires,” said Ellen Katz, president/CEO of GCF.
The long list of their civic and philanthropic leadership demonstrates the depth of their commitment to our community, and especially to children and adults with disabilities as reflected by five decades of partnership with Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center. In honor of his and Joan’s dedication to human services and the arts, Bill served on numerous charitable boards and committees including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Taft Museum of Art, Freestore Foodbank, YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, United Way of Greater Cincinnati. And they ardently supported Thomas More College, where they first met.
The Member-in-Charge of Frost Brown Todd’s Northern Kentucky office until his passing in 2017, Bill gained national prominence as President of the American Bar Association (2011-12). He also championed economic development in Northern Kentucky.

CINCINNATI (May 3, 2016) — Procter & Gamble (P&G) announced today that the company has delivered its 10 billionth liter of clean drinking water through the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program.
To mark the occasion, P&G is offering a 10-1 donation match. For every U.S. $1 donated to the program by consumers from May 3, 2016 – May 31, 2016, the company will donate U.S. $10, up to a total P&G contribution of $1 million, to the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Fund, which is a charitable fund managed by The Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Children's Safe Drinking Water started in 2004, works with more than 150 partners and organizations to provide clean drinking water to those who lack access to clean water.
The 10 billionth liter was shared with Margarita, Gabriel and their children Alejandro and Lorena who are part of a World Vision community project near Oaxaca, Mexico.
It only takes $7.50 to provide a year’s worth of clean water to a child and $30 to share a year’s worth of clean water with a family of five. You can donate now and have P&G multiply your donation by ten.

A peek at their resumés reveals an impressive list of professional and volunteer accomplishments and awards. This modest couple downplays their work and contributions.
Bill, Chairman Emeritus of Bartlett & Co., has been honored as a Great Living Cincinnatian and Sue as a Cincinnati Enquirer Woman of the Year.
Last fall, The Greater Cincinnati Foundation presented them with the 2009 Jacob E. Davis Volunteer Leadership Award. The Award honors community-minded citizens who volunteer their time and leadership skills to make Greater Cincinnati a better place to live.
“I don’t like talking about myself,” Sue admitted. They do open up about teaching the importance of giving to their grandchildren and about their long relationship with GCF.
In 2008, the plunging economy inspired Sue to send their family an e-mail suggesting they forgo Christmas gifts and instead give to the charities of their choice.
“I had immediate responses from every grandchild and one granddaughter, who is about to graduate from high school, wrote back, ‘I can’t tell you how happy you made me feel.’ So it worked!” Sue said. “I was thrilled that they agreed with me. I think they genuinely agreed from their hearts.”
The following summer, the entire family participated in a two-day retreat to talk about giving away money and helping the community. One of the charitable tools discussed was Bill and Sue’s GCF donor advised fund which becomes an unrestricted fund at their deaths, adding to the resources GCF has to meet the future needs of this region.
Bill and Sue have been involved with GCF for more than 25 years; Bill served as a Board member and as Volunteer Director at a pivotal point in the Foundation’s development. Sue has served as a member of the Women’s Fund Advisory Board.
“Community foundations are key players in that they know more about the needs and specific problems in the community,” Bill said. He also noted that people could establish field of interest or unrestricted funds that will benefit the community far into the future, either with gifts during their lifetime or with a bequest in their will.
“We (GCF) have about $400 million dollars now, and give out millions a year — that’s a significant boon to the community. I don’t know any other organization that does that,” he added. “So, there are people that have the knowledge and the people that have the funds. It seems to me that’s a nice combination.”
GCF’s Jacob E. Davis Volunteer Leadership Award was named after GCF’s first Governing Board Chairman and Volunteer Director. Jake Davis could also be thanked for introducing Bill and Sue to GCF.
Bill became acquainted with Jake, then President of the Kroger Co., when he was raising money for the Fine Arts Fund. Jake was looking for young people to get involved with GCF and approached Bill.
The talented couple said that in all their years of volunteering they have only worked together once — on the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s (CSO) Century 21 Fund.
“When we were approached, I got excited but I thought, ‘will the marriage survive this?’ Sue laughed. “But it was good! It worked.” Of course it worked — they exceeded their goal and raised $45 million for the CSO’s endowment, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who knows this couple — truly a nice combination.
(Sept. 15, 2009) - The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) will present the 2009 Jacob E. Davis Volunteer Leadership Award to William and Susan Friedlander at its Annual Luncheon on Tuesday, September 22, 2009. Mr. and Mrs. Friedlander are being recognized for their individual and combined contributions to many local institutions.
GCF’s Award, presented since 1987, recognizes the leadership and generosity of time provided by an individual or couple committed to improving the quality of life in Greater Cincinnati. The Award was named in honor of Jacob E. Davis, GCF’s first Governing Board Chair and Volunteer Director from 1978 to 1987.
Bill and Sue Friedlander have a long history of giving back to their hometown of Cincinnati. Bill, Chairman Emeritus of Bartlett & Co., has been involved with The Greater Cincinnati Foundation for more than 25 years.
Mr. Friedlander is currently on the boards of the Mercantile Library, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Walnut Hills High School Foundation. The long list of his volunteer activities also includes the Cincinnati Association for the Arts, the Jewish Hospital Board and the Wyoming School Board. The Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber named Bill a Great Living Cincinnatian in 1999.
Mrs. Friedlander also has an extensive volunteer career. She is currently on the Planned Parenthood Foundation Board, and has served on GCF’s Women’s Fund Leadership Council, the Cincinnati Association for the Blind, the Cincinnati Parks Foundation Board and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Board, to name a few. Sue was named an Enquirer Woman of the Year in 1997.
Together, Bill and Sue have been honored with the Humanitarian Award from the American Jewish Committee (2002), United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Service and Voluntarism (1998), and the Post-Corbett Lifetime Achievement Award (1997).
“Bill and Sue Friedlander epitomize the kind of deep, sustained commitment to giving, and to giving back, that is so essential for a vibrant and healthy community,” said GCF President/CEO Kathryn E. Merchant.
As the Jacob E. Davis Volunteer Leadership Award recipient, the Friedlanders have the privilege of designating a $10,000 grant to one or more local nonprofits. They have asked that it be divided between the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Tender Mercies.
GCF’s luncheon will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 22 at the Hilton Netherland Plaza Pavillion Ballroom.
